During the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Three were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; South Hilo, four; Puna and South Kohala, two each.

So far this year, there have been 929 DUI arrests compared to 931 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.21%.

There have been 815 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,010 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19.3%.

To date, there have been 16 official traffic fatalities compared to 26 fatalities during the same time last year, a decrease of 38.5%.

There have also been three vehicle-related deaths police don’t count toward the official total — two because autopsies ruled the drivers’ deaths were because of medical conditions, the third because the fatal collision occurred within federal jurisdiction in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
